February's
FACT OR FICTION
Health Quiz!

Question 1: Fact or Fiction? You're more likely to get sick in winter because cold weather weakens your immune system.

Answer: Fiction! Cold weather itself doesn't weaken your immune system. We get sick more often in winter because we spend more time indoors in close contact with others, giving viruses more opportunities to spread. The dry indoor air can also dry out the protective mucus membranes in our noses and throats. Good handwashing, staying hydrated, and keeping indoor humidity levels comfortable (30-50%) can help keep you healthy all winter long.

Question 2: Fact or Fiction? You need to drink less water in winter because you're not sweating as much.

Answer: Fiction! Winter air is often very dry, especially indoors with heating systems running. This can lead to dehydration without you even realizing it. Plus, your body works hard to stay warm, which requires adequate hydration. Aim to drink water throughout the day, even if you don't feel as thirsty as you do in summer.

Question 3: Fact or Fiction? The risk of heart attack increases during cold weather.

Answer: Fact! Cold temperatures cause blood vessels to constrict, which can raise blood pressure and increase strain on the heart. Activities like shoveling snow can be particularly risky because they combine cold exposure with intense physical exertion. If you have heart disease or risk factors, please talk with us about winter precautions, take breaks during outdoor activities, and know the warning signs of a heart attack.
